HARVEY

Hi! As you all know, IBD is a deeply rooted Houston based business. We are so proud to call Houston our home base and hurricane Harvey has been so devastating to so many fellow Houstonians.

We are incredibly lucky to announce that our warehouse was not effected in the storm - no flooding and no leaks! Our #1 priority as a team is to give back to those in need and we want to help as much as possible.

IBD is happy to announce that we will be donating 10% of all sales in the month of September to JJ Watt's Houston Harvey Relief fund. This money will go directly to helping families in need and literally every single penny counts. Shopping for a cause? What could be better?!

DESIGNER WE LOVE: KAI KRISTIANSEN

Lately I have been crushing really hard on Kai Kristiansen so I thought it was only fitting to write a quick bio on one of my favorite designers. Curiously enough, there was not as much information on Mr. Kristiansen as there are many other Danish designers, although his pieces are equally recognizable.

Kristiansen was born in 1929. Much like many of his colleagues at the time, Kristiansen was originally trained as a cabinet maker. After his cabinetry training was completed in 1950 he continued on to study under Kaare Klint at the Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Once this vigorous training was completed, Kristiansen moved on to open his own office in Copenhagen and worked with many other designers and manufacturers. Kristiansens most popular pieces include the "FM" wall unit, known for its versatility and function, as well as the "dining chairs #42", known for their spectacular beauty and comfort. Like many in his time, Kristiansen believed that the design of a piece is only as good as the functionality.

COPY MY STYLE: LIVING ROOM!

Hello lovelies,

I am currently in the midst of a few home renovations and can't wait to show you the results! I thought that it would be fun to show you guys a glimpse of my living room, as well as a few ways to "copy" my style (only if you want to of course). I always have a fun time mixing some mid century pieces with new items and accessories to give them a whole new updated feel.

kate+chris (12 of 32).jpg

CREDENZA - I chose a rosewood credenza with a thick, rich, dark grain. Credenzas are almost always investment pieces, but you can find them reasonably priced and they will last you FOREVER. They can easily go in any room of the house or can transfer into any style of interior. I like to use credenzas instead of entertainment centers because they easily conceal those electronic eye sores that we all love to have. Below are a few credenza options that we have

COFFEE TABLE - We all love coffee tables. I know that mine doubles as a dining table a little too often when Chris and I get sucked into a new TV series (currently crushing on Homeland...).

PILLOWS - As you can see, I love adding pops of color with pillows! My good friend Shay is the designer and owner of Bunglo and I have her pillows in my home. She does such a fantastic job! I love the watercolor prints as they still feel natural in our and mix with the natural materials in our room.

BOOK CASE - I previously wrote a post all about bookcases and how to make them more interesting and visual. Our book case is an eccentric mix of design books, cook books and a few literary classics. It is always fun to add accessories that showcase your personality and add a bit of color. Did you know that you can now order books all in the same color?? Click here to learn more

RUG - Since we have a large open floor plan, I think that adding a rug really helps break up the space. I love the way that rugs can add in a quick pop of color while still being useful. I find almost all of my rugs at discount stores online like Gilt.com or Hautelook.com. The quality of the rugs that they send are always great and I love getting a good deal where I can. Plus, my dogs love to run around on the carpet but I am still not sure if that is a good thing or a bad one....

That is all for now! I can't wait to show all of you the office and guest bedroom. I think that the study might be my new favorite room in the whole house.

UPDATE!

HI, HELLO, HOLA, BONJOUR!

Geez! It has been forever since my last blog post - I am so sorry. Seriously, there has been so much going on lately that I feel like I can finally breathe and blog again. Here is a little bit of an update to all of you:

Lets start out with the only bit of bad news that I have for you...there was a fire at the IBD warehouse. The fire originated in the space next to ours, but burned through the shared wall and into our space. The fire started around 3AM, so it went unseen for several hours before the Houston Fire Department arrived to control the fire (thank you, Houston Fire Department for all that you do!!!). We ended up losing around 75% of our inventory due to smoke, fire and water damage, but this was a huge learning experience. The IBD team would like to say thank you to all of the people that helped us during this crazy time...we couldn't have gotten through it without you and the outpouring of love that we received was simply amazing.

Now for the good news...and there is a lot of it! First, we received our second container shipment from Copenhagen. We are so proud of the inventory that we have to offer you and can't wait to show you! Some of the inventory has already been posted, but there is still a lot more to come! Stay tuned for more listings - I hope you guys like them just as much as we do.

Next, we have a new, temporary warehouse space! We are really loving the new space, location and are having so much fun with it. We would love to have you come by for a visit to check out the new space and container! The new address is 215 West Gray Street!

Finally, on a personal note, Chris and I got married in Maui at the end of August. I know this is cliche, but the day was truly magical and the best day of our lives. We were so lucky to be surrounded by 44 of our closest friends and family members and celebrated all night long. If you tried contacting IBD while we were away, I apologize for the delayed response and hope you understand!

Life sure has been crazy lately and we couldn't be more excited about it! The IBD team has so many awesome things to share with you this fall so keep checking back in!

Travel Adventures

Hello, everyone! Thanks for checking back in. I am so sorry that I have not been in touch lately, but I am back in the blogging saddle and can't wait to share with you all of the awesome things we have been working on for you! Seriously, I am so excited I can't even stand it! Keep checking in for more details.

As you may know, we just got back from a trip! Our trip really was incredible. We started out in Copenhagen on a furniture buying excursion. We got 72 new items that should be here towards the middle of summer! Chris and I spent so many hours searching for the perfect pieces for you all, so I hope you guys like them. More on that to come soon.

Copenhagen is a special place for us because we have developed relationships with the people out there. We went to dinners, long, wine-filled lunches and got to catch up with our friends. I can't even begin to tell you about all of the fantastic meals we had so I will share a few photos below.

After a few days in CPH, we set off to Florence and I immediately fell in love. It was my first time in Italy and now I know what all of the hype is. The beauty of the city is breathtaking - it was so crazy to see the mountains and river all encompassed by this historical city filled with masterpieces by so many incredible artists and architects.

Now that we are back, I can't wait to share with you all a few projects that we have been working on and details on the next shipment! Stay tuned and shop on (and don't forget that we recently marked down a ton of items!) Ciao!

Favorite Things..

Hello, everyone! I am so excited to announce that we are heading back to Copenhagen in 1 month! I am excited not only because this means that I get to head over to my favorite city in Europe, but also because it means we will have more INVENTORY!!

The first shipment was crazy - I picked out items that I thought would sell in an instant that didn't sell as quickly, as well as items that I never expected to be so hot sell out in weeks! It has been such a whirlwind but I want to know from you all - what are you looking for to complete your home? What types of items would you like to see us bring over?

MY FAVORITE INTERIOR DESIGN TIP...

As serious interior design junkies, we find ourselves reading every piece of advice we can get our hands on. There are so many tips and tricks out there it can all get a little bit overwhelming.  Before you go and paint the cabinets in your kitchen or revamp your furniture (BTW - we are reupholstering some chairs in collaboration with Bunglo soon), remember one simple rule: choose a base color palette for your home.

It sounds so simple, right? Well, it is simple yet so crucial. It will make everything so much easier when it comes to decorating your space. It gives you a game plan so if you are out shopping and something catches your eye, you know if it will work in your space before bringing it home.

Choosing your color palette is simple: you should select one base color (preferably a neutral) and 2-3 other accent colors. The easiest way to do this is to stand in your space and choose colors that you enjoy looking at. You also want to select colors that fit in with the space you have.  Think about the fixtures in your home that are difficult to change, like the kitchen countertops or floor color, and try to work with the colors you see in there or colors within the same family.

Click the image to view in our shop!

For the accent colors, dont be afraid get playful! It is always fun to add a pop of color in any room of the house and color is always a great way to express your personality.

Best of luck decorating your new home! What is your color palette? Chat with us in the comments!

WHATS HOT THIS SUMMER

What is hot this summer? Well, in Houston, it seems like EVERYTHING is hot – both indoors and out. I thought it would be appropriate to start talking about the hot summer trends that we are seeing this summer indoors.

Copper Lighting - Copper lighting is so IN right now. Try it out as a pendant or table lamp and turn the heat up!

LeatherLeather is always in, but it is EVERYWHERE this summer – from the runways to the inside of your home. Look for hints of leather in unexpected places to make yourself really stand out from the others.

Cool Blues and Grays - That’s right, this summer is all about cool colors in your home – blues and grays to contrast with the heat outside. Before you go redecorating your entire home, see if you can incorporate the colors in smaller, versatile items.

CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE...

Loveseat that is! Thats right - today we are talking about loveseats and small sofas! Lets dive in...

Finn Juhl loveseat

Loveseats are a great piece to have in your home for several reasons. First off, they can go in almost any room: living room, study, bedrooms, you name it and look awesome. Have a space in your home that needs to be filled but you just don't know what to do with it? A love seat might be the perfect item that you never thought of. If you have a small space, a loveseat might be the best way to maximize your floor plan!

Our very own Kai Kristiansen Loveseat

Loveseats can also be a fun way to add some color into your home! Since they are on the smaller size, a loveseat in a fantastic color can add the "pop" you need to take your space from drap to fab.

Lastly, loveseats are versatile. You can snuggle up with your pups (mine are below), read a book, enjoy conversation with your friends or use it to hold your purse.

Do you own a loveseat? What room is it in? I love hearing from you!

DESIGNER WE LOVE: HANS WEGNER

"Many foreigners have asked me how we made the Danish style. And I've answered that it...was rather a continuous process of purification, and for me of simplification, to cut down to the simplest possible elements of four legs, a seat and combined top rail and arm rest." - Hans Wegner

As a continuation of our designer series, we wanted to make today all about Hans Wegner! Hans Wegner is one of our favorite Danish designers, so learning about his background was fun and insightful.

As a child, Hans Wegner worked as an apprentice to master cabinet maker, HF Wahlberg. It was during this apprenticeship that he realized his affection for wood. Upon completion of his apprenticeship at age 17, Hans continued to work here for 3 more years before studying at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts.

One of my favorite Wegner designs.

Hans then began to work for Erik Møller and Arne Jacobsen. Afterwards, he began designing furniture with Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller for Arhus Town Hall before finally continuing on to establish his own studio.

Hans Wegner is best known for his designs using wood and leather, but did experiment with laminets occasionally. During his career, Hans Wegner won several major design awards.

GETTING MARRIED

Since I am in the midst of planning a wedding, I started doing some research on wedding traditions in other cultures. It really is not something that I thought about before, but now it seems like it is something crossing my mind everyday.

Beautiful Danish countryside

Beautiful Danish countryside

The Danish have some fun wedding traditions so I thought it would be appropriate to share them since we sell Danish furniture.

- After the ceremony, if groom leaves the reception room (for whatever reason), all of the women at the wedding will run up and kiss the groom. This rule goes both ways and the bride will leave, and all of the male guests rush to kiss the groom.

- At some point during the reception, the groom will be forcibly hoisted up by all of the males at the celebration and they will cut off the toes of his socks. I found that the reason for this is to prevent the male from being unfaithful. In the old days, people only had 1 pair of socks and 1 pair of shoes. If a male took off his shoes and his socks were cut, people would know that the man was married. Kind of fun that this tradition help up, huh?!

- Gate of Honor - This is an arch made of primarily pine and other items that is placed outside the door of the bride and grooms home. This gate is brought back out for the couples silver anniversary.

danishtradition.jpg

Weren't these traditions kind of fun? Which one is your favorite? Did you incorporate any traditions into your wedding?

coffee talk

If you know me, you know that I am addicted to coffee. Thats right...I said it. My name is Kate and I am an addict. The first step is admitting it right?! Anyways, my point in this is to warm you up a little bit because today we are talking about coffee tables!

Coffee tables are awesome. Really, they are! I tend to work at home, sitting on the floor with my computer on the coffee table while my pups chase each other around the house. I love keeping a pop of color and reading material on the coffee table as well. I always have a copy of the latest Dwell magazine sitting on the table along with a copy of Food + Wine magazine sitting out.

I find myself always looking at coffee tables online. What is sitting out on your coffee table? What is your favorite design? Send it over - I would love to see!

Chasing Dreams + Start Up Things...

Today I was walking through the warehouse and it dawned on me that it would be a good idea to share with you all our behind the scenes process. Being that we are still a new business, we are learning and having so much fun doing it!

Finn working at the warehouse!

Finn working at the warehouse!

It all starts after the furniture is ordered! Our contact in Copenhagen packs them all into a container and the journey begins! I start by creating an inventory sheet and setting prices by doing research to pick an appropriate price.

Container packed up and ready to make the long journey from CPH to Houston.

Once the furniture arrives, the IBD team spends a day unloading the container, cleaning the furniture and tagging it. It is a funny process trying to piece together the furniture and find its “spot” in the space – some of the items are very heavy!

Up next, we photograph all of the furniture to get it online and take measurements! When I started the process, I did not know too much about photography and am still learning about the appropriate angles. This is probably my favorite step because I get to pay attention to the detail in all of our items.

We are having so much fun with the business and I hope that you were able to see it when you look at our website and items. I am so blessed to have supportive friends and family as I figure all of this out. This really is my passion and I am so excited to give it my best! Everyone should aim for the stars and chase their dreams – no matter what they are!
